Ενθουσιασμός για τις φυσικές ομορφιές της Ρόδου, δέος για την ιστορία της,
ικανοποίηση από τη συμμετοχή σε περιβαλλοντικές δράσεις και ευτυχία – γέννημα της
φιλοξενίας των ντόπιων είναι όλα εκείνα στοιχεία που γέμισαν τις αποσκευές των
φοιτητριών και φοιτητών του εμβληματικού πανεπιστημίου South California, κατά την
παρουσία τους στο νησί την περασμένη εβδομάδα.
Το University of South California, με 44.000 φοιτητές και τμήματα που καλύπτουν
σχεδόν όλο το φάσμα των επιστημών, είναι ένα από τα πιο μεγάλα και πιο γνωστά
πανεπιστήμια των ΗΠΑ. Φοιτητές, φοιτήτριες και δύο στελέχη του πανεπιστημίου αυτού
βρέθηκαν στη Ρόδο, στο πλαίσιο των πρωτοβουλιών που αναλαμβάνει και υλοποιεί ο
καθηγητής Ηλίας Τομάζος με τους συνεργάτες του στο Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών
Αμερικής «Παιδεία» και στον Παρροδιακό Σύλλογο Αμερικής – Καναδά «Απόλλων».
Στις έξι ημέρες παραμονής στους στη Ρόδο τα παιδιά συμμετείχαν σε τρεις
περιβαλλοντικές δράσεις και μία ενημερωτική εκδήλωση σχετικά με το φυσικό περιβάλλον
της Ρόδου.
Ειδικότερα, συμμετείχαν σε δύο δράσεις αναδάσωσης στο καμένο δάσος μεταξύ των
χωριών Λαέρμων – Λάρδου – Απολλώνων, σε έκταση 380 στρεμμάτων που έχουν
υιοθετήσει από κοινού το «Παιδεία» και ο «Απόλλων», σε συνεργασία με την κοινωνική
επιχείρηση – οργάνωση «Για τη φύση». Η δράση περιλάμβανε τη φύτευση λυγαριών,
βελανιδιών, κυπαρισσιών και πεύκων, όλα προσφορά του Περιφερειακού Φυτωρίου
Νοτίου Αιγαίου. Όλα τα νέα δέντρα σηματοδοτήθηκαν, περιφράχθηκαν με φυσικό τρόπο
για να προστατευτούν από την ανεξέλεγκτη βόσκηση και θα τυγχάνουν ποτίσματος και
δασοπονικής φροντίδας μέχρις να μπορούν από μόνα τους να επιβιώσουν στο νέο τους
περιβάλλον. Μάλιστα, στη δεύτερη δράση δεντροφύτευσης, συμμετείχαν και φοιτητές από
το Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγαίου.
Οι φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες των ΗΠΑ συμμετείχαν σε καθαρισμό του άλσους Αγίου
Σουλά από τις πευκοβελόνες. Ο καθαρισμός έγινε με τη συνεργασία του προέδρου της
κοινότητας Σορωνής κ. Μανώλη Μπονιάτη και μελών του τοπικού συμβουλίου.
Στην ενημερωτική εκδήλωση για το περιβάλλον τα παιδιά του University of South
California ενημερώθηκαν από πρώτο χέρι για τα όσα αφορούν τα δάση της Ρόδου.
Ομιλητές ήταν: Η προϊσταμένη της Διεύθυνσης Δασών Δωδεκανήσου κα. Καίτη
Μπαλατσούκα, ο διοικητής της Πυροσβεστικής Υπηρεσίας Ρόδου Πύραρχος Νικήτας
Βενιός, ο διευθυντής του Περιφερειακού Φυτωρίου Νοτίου Αιγαίου Νίκος Ρένεσης και
μέλη της οργάνωσης «Για τη φύση».
Τα παιδιά όχι μόνο έδειξαν ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για τα προβλήματα από τις δασικές
πυρκαγιές, αλλά προχώρησαν στην ανταλλαγή γνώσεων για τους τρόπους με τους οποίους
γίνεται η διαχείριση των πυρκαγιών στα δάση της Καλιφόρνια, καθώς επίσης και στους
τρόπους με τους οποίους γίνεται η διαχείριση του μεγάλου αριθμού των ελαφιών στα
νησιά της Χαβάης.
Σε όλες τις δραστηριότητες, δίπλα στους φοιτητές και τους συνοδούς τους ήταν
διαρκώς ο καθηγητής του πανεπιστημίου του Κονέκτικατ, πρόεδρος του «Παιδεία» και
πρόεδρος του «Απόλλων» κ. Ηλίας Τομάζος. Κοντά του, οι κ.κ. Γιώργος Μπονιάτης,
Στέφανος Χρύσαλλος και Γιάννης Φωτίου, ως μέλη του «Απόλλων». Οι μετακινήσεις των
φοιτητών, των φοιτητριών και των συνοδών τους έγιναν με πούλμαν του τουριστικού
γραφείου GEM Travel.
Αυτή ήταν η πρώτη φορά κατά την οποία φοιτητές – φοιτήτριες από το University of
South California επισκέπτονται τη Ρόδο και ικανοποίησή τους έδειξε ότι η δράση αυτή θα
επαναληφθεί πολύ σύντομα με μια καινούρια ομάδα παιδιών.
